Welcome back and OzClo Competition

Welcome back everyone! 2009 is set to be a busy year in Indonesian.

The first thing underway is an invitation to you all to form teams to enter the OzCLO competition.

This competition looks to be great fun. The idea is that as a team of 2-3 eople you solve all kinds of linguistic problems and puzzles. You may have seen the Egyptian Hierglyphics sample around the school.

For a look at some sample puzzles just cut and paste the address below into your browser. When you get to the table click on the ‘problem’ section. Once you’ve had a go and think you know the answer, you can return to that screen and look at the solutions.

If you enjoy these and think this competition might be for you, please see Ibu Nathalie ASAP. Deadlines for team registration is the 13th of Feb.

Have a great first week!

Treasure Hunt Mystery Word

Congratulations for getting this far!

Your mystery word is “laci

Now go into the LOTE room.  You will find some random letters drawn on the board.

Rearrange those letters to discover the next mystery word.

Hint: The mystery word is something you would usually find in the LOTE room.

Good Luck!

Indonesian Ambassador’s Visit

AlecStudents in year 8 and 9 who have chosen to continue with Indonesian next year met with our Indonesian Ambassador ‘Alec’ last week. Alec studied Indonesian as a TEE subject and shared with us the opportunities and experiences he has had as a result of studying Indonesian. His presentation was inspiring. We all enjoyed viewing his photos and hearing fascinating tales of life as a ‘bule’!

Thanks Alec – come and join us for a ‘kopi’ ANYTIME!

Visit from Ibu Faridah

Today we had a visit from a ‘real’ Indonesian speaker – as a result we now have plans to establish links with other LOTE students in Christmas Island, as email pen-pals in 2009. Thank you to Ibu Faridah for spending some time in our classroom and sharing your experiences with us. We all learned a lot!

Bizarre?!!

The following article appeared in a newspaper some years ago. What do you think? A good idea? Could we use a similar strategy in Australia for any of our problems?

10-rat Tax to plaque all married couples.

The West Java village of Wirakan has imposed an ingenious tax system to combat a plague of rats gorging on the rice harvest.  Couples planning to marry must pay 10 dead rats. Divorce costs 20 rats.

‘Everyone must go to the ricefields to catch them’ said village chief Darwa Saputra. “No-one is allowed to buy the rats or employ others to do it.”

Saputra said there could be as many as 4000 million rats in the district by next year if nothing was done about them.

Pandai?

How pandai are you feeling today? Here is a list of words. Can you write a paragraph that includes every single one of these words? If you are sangat pandai you may be able to do it in one sentence! The words can be used in any order. If there are any you have forgotten the meaning of you can check your notes or use the translator to the side of this post.

Good luck.

Words to use: hari sekolah sebelum dengan lalu teman makan keluarga

Ideas Welcome for Year 10 Planning

As mentioned to the year 9s in class, I would love to hear your input regarding ideas for next year.

Some suggestions have been restaurant visits, pen-pals from a linked school, 40 hour famine….and down the track, possibly a trip to Bali!!!!

I know how creative you all are so let’s get those ideas on to ….pixels and share them here. This is open to all year levels – after all, you all have a vested interest in what the year 10 course will eventually look like.

You are the first students to go through so you are in a great position to have some input into how our course develops. Don’t waste this opportunity to have your say. Share your thoughts NOW!

Welcome back. Please be patient while we make adjustments!

Well it’s a new term and as we discussed in class today there are some pretty big changes happening to our lesson formats and general operations in LOTE.

Please be patient as we smooth out the wrinkles, and feel free to comment and make suggestions as always. More ideas means more opportunities to have our class run smoothly.

I realised one hiccup already tonight and that is that the assessments being submitted on Wed may not the best way to go.

My thinking was that if you submit them on Wed I’ll have the weekend to mark them and can get them back to you the very next time I see you (Tuesday). I thought this was a good idea, except that it occurred to me tonight that if you have sport or some other commitment on Tuesday night (when I’ve asked you to prep your draft) it makes it very hard for you to give it a decent shot before submitting it on Wednesday.

Perhaps giving you the draft task on the Wednesday, with the weekend to work on it, followed by the in class edit and submission on Tuesday would be better. The only problem with that is that I wouldn’t be able to get them back to you all at the very next lesson (Wed) as it means marking 120 odd papers overnight. You’d get them back the next Tuesday.

So I’m asking you to have YOUR SAY. Can you please indicate which option you’d prefer to work with.

Option 1: Draft to be completed on Tuesday/Wednesday submission (marked and returned next lesson)

Option 2: Draft completed over a week/Tuesday submission (marked and returned 2nd lesson after submission)

Leave your answer as a comment. I’ll tally them and we’ll go with that decision.

Any other suggestions welcome too.

Ibu :)

Iklan-iklan

This week we looked at some examples of Indonesian TV advertisements. How were they similar/different to advertisements on Australian television?

You may like to look at some more. you can find a lot on YouTube – just type in Iklan for Indonesian ads. You may also like to see if your favourite brand has an ad showing in Indonesia by typing in ‘iklan’ followed by the brand name. Make sure you get your parent’s ok before going on YouTube.

Feedback comments from your findings welcome!

Homework info!

Please note that I won’t be accepting the old ‘I was away so I didn’t know about the homework’ excuse, any longer!

The reason being that you are now all being asked to visit this site in the event of illness/absence and keep informed. You’ll find a section to the left of this blog labelled homework – this will have all the details.

HAhhhhhaaaaaaa!!!!! (evil laugh) Students thwarted again. Current score: Ibu Nat –  6 billion and twelve, students – nil (ok, ok, 1 if you count Cory’s AC/DC remark today!)

Now go do your homework! :)
